“And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.” John 8:9
The only way we can remain standing like this woman is to be standing under the protection and provision of Jesus. Any faith placed in some other object or self- performance will cause you to walk away in despair like these men. The harder you throw the boomerang of judgment the harder it comes back at yourself. These men went from pride to despair which is exactly what religious people do over and over again because their faith is in themselves. They are prideful when they are doing well and despairing when they are not, forgetting that growth is a process.
Are you despairing because of your seemingly many failures? Or are you prideful and cocky and look down on those around you? Instead embrace the reality that you’re far more screwed up then you ever realized and radically more loved then you ever dared to dream. This leads to a humble confidence and a desire for growth.
Lord, I know I’m not alone in my failures and I’m not alone in my victories. My brothers and sisters around me share the same trials and struggles. In the middle of that process help us keep our eyes fixed on you the Author and Finisher of our faith. Amen
