He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter*). John 1:42
The name Simon means “shifting sand”. Jesus took one look at Simon and said “nope I see so much more in you, you’re going to be called Peter from now on.” Peter means “Rock”. This is how the Lord see us. He doesn’t see all our hang ups and rough edges. He sees the beauty and potential.
This is very near and dear to my heart because this is where I find meaning and joy in my life. I find it by recognizing the potential and beauty in someone’s life and fanning into flame. I don’t need to compete with people. Their success is my success anyways.
Now if I could only see it in myself. I doesn’t work that way though. We need each other to see it. This is my prayer for Willow Creek Church. Only the gospel sets us free to move forward. Navel gazing and harsh introspection on our past and failures appears to be spiritual but it’s actually just a dressy version of pride that is the deepest sin of all.
